AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Durga Mandir Rajadwar is a spacious community Hindu temple on Durgeshwari Road in the historic Rajadwar quarter of North Guwahati, Assam. Known locally as the Sarbojanin (public) Durga temple, it draws devotees for daily worship and is particularly lively during Durga Puja.↗↗
The temple sits in one of Assam's most layered landscapes: Rajadwar literally means King's Gate, and the area was the capital of the ancient Kamarupa kingdom under the Pala dynasty. Within a short walk lie the Ahom-era temples of Manikarneswar and Doul Govinda, making this a natural stop for anyone exploring North Guwahati's temple heritage.↗↗

A Temple in the Kingdom's Gateway
Rajadwar takes its name from the Assamese words for King's Gate — the entrance through which rulers of the old Kamarupa kingdom once passed when crossing the Brahmaputra from the south. This pocket of North Guwahati served as the Pala dynasty capital, known then as Durjaya, until around 1206 CE, and the echoes of that royal past still shape the neighbourhood: scattered ancient sculptures, rock-cut engravings, and a dense cluster of temples along the river bank.
