AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Madan Mohan Temple is a small, active Hindu shrine tucked into the Wangkhei neighbourhood of Imphal, the capital of Manipur. Dedicated to Madan Mohan—a beloved form of the god Krishna—it offers visitors a quiet, local window into the Vaishnava devotion that shapes much of the Imphal valley's religious life.↗↗
Unlike the grand royal temples near the old Kangla fort, this is a neighbourhood temple first and foremost: a place where residents come for daily darshan rather than a monument built for crowds. What was recently renovated is now a calm, clean spot to experience Manipur's living Hindu traditions at an intimate, everyday scale.↗↗
A Krishna temple in the heart of Wangkhei
The temple takes its name from Madan Mohan, one of the most widely worshipped forms of Krishna in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition that travels across eastern India and into Manipur. The deity's pull here is the same as elsewhere: Krishna as the enchanting, flute-bearing beloved, approached by devotees as both god and friend. Set on Kongba Kshetri Leikai Road in the Wangkhei area (pincode 795003), the temple sits within a residential part of Imphal rather than a tourist precinct, so the rhythms you see are the daily ones of an ordinary worshipped household.
