AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Dauji Mandir stands in Khair, a small town in Hathras district of western Uttar Pradesh, in the cultural zone called "Braj ki Dehri"—the threshold to Braj, the legendary land of Krishna. The name Dauji is the affectionate Braj-language title for Balarama, Krishna's elder brother, and this temple serves the local community as a place of daily devotion and seasonal gathering. Though it lacks the scale and fame of the great Dauji shrine at Baldeo further south, the temple earns its place in a traveler's day for its quiet atmosphere and an old structure that one visitor compared to the intimate feel of the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan.↗↗↗

A local shrine to the elder brother
Across the Braj belt—stretching from Mathura through Hathras and into the surrounding countryside—Balarama is not the secondary figure he becomes elsewhere in Hindu devotional traditions. Here he is Dauji Maharaj, the protective elder brother, sometimes called the King of Braj. Temples bearing his name dot the landscape, from the ancient fortified citadel at Baldeo to the 275-year-old temple inside Hathras city's old fort. Khair's Dauji Mandir belongs to this same family of shrines: a neighborhood center of faith where priests perform daily seva and where the wider community gathers during the season's festivals.
