AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Chitgar Forest Park is the big green exhale of western Tehran—a planted woodland so vast and so full of pine-scented trails that locals call it one of the capital's main 'lungs.' Tucked into District 22 against the Tehran–Karaj freeway, it rolls across hills studded with conifers and broadleaf trees, threaded with cycling lanes, shaded picnic glades and playgrounds, with a wide artificial lake shimmering just to its north.↗↗
This is not a tidy ornamental garden but a genuine forest built for a city: created in the 1960s to green the western edge of Tehran, filter its air and blunt the dry winds blowing in from the plains. Today it is a sprawling, low-cost day-out where families lay out cloths under the trees, cyclists chase the ridge trails, and evenings drift toward the lakefront cafés.↗↗
Come for the scale and the variety: a few hours of cycling or a lazy picnic is easily combined with a stroll along the neighbouring Persian Gulf Martyrs Lake, making Chitgar one of the easiest and most rewarding half-days anywhere in Tehran.
