Motogoeyama

Choosing Your Trail

Mount Motogoe can be climbed from several directions, each with a distinct character. The most established route is the Kidatachi Trail, departing from the Saiki-city side. The path is wide, well-graded, and heavily signposted — a comfortable round-trip of roughly 6.7 kilometers taking about two and a quarter hours. Access is straightforward: from JR Saiki Station it's about twelve minutes by car heading toward the coast, where numerous guide signs direct you to the parking area (capacity around five vehicles). The local hiking club holds an organized group climb every February, a friendly tradition that welcomes newcomers.↗↗

From the Yonouzu side, the Iroigaura Trail offers a different rhythm. Starting through a small village and past orange groves, the route climbs steeply on log steps through natural evergreen forest before settling onto a pleasing ridgeline. Numbered viewpoint shelters are spaced at roughly fifteen-minute intervals, each revealing a new slice of the coastline below — the first shows the cove of Iroigaura, the third at around 300 meters opens up the full northeastern sea view. The round trip covers about 4.9 kilometers in roughly three and a half hours, with a free parking lot (about 30 spaces) and simple toilets at the trailhead. Hiking poles are sometimes provided near the entrance for those who need them.↗↗

A quieter alternative is the Urashiro Course, which begins right beside the sea and climbs through terraced fields and young plantation forest. Distance markers are posted every 100 meters, and the path is maintained by local volunteers who clearly take pride in their work. Expect about three hours round trip on a warm summer day. For those wanting a longer outing, a ridge traverse connecting Motogoe with neighboring peaks Iroiyama and Ishizuchi, and onward to the Sky Park overlook on the Bungo Kuroshio Line, runs roughly 9.7 kilometers and takes about five hours. A volunteer-run shuttle links the Sky Park and Iroigaura trailheads for one-way hikes.↗↗

Seasons on the Mountain

Winter and early spring bring the clearest air and the best long-distance visibility — Shikoku's peaks may appear across the channel. January and February see the highest hiker traffic, partly because the mountain is the featured route for a New Year group climb, and partly because the cold season strips away foliage that would otherwise block viewlines along the lower trail. March brings fresh greens and the first warm-weather wildflowers: coastal thrift, hammer orchids, and daylilies appear along the lower sections near the sea.↗↗

Summer is hot and humid on the coast, and the forest rings with cicadas so loud that conversation becomes difficult. Still, the green canopy provides welcome shade, and the wildflower list grows longer with each visit. Autumn delivers comfortable temperatures, changing colors among the mixed broadleaf stands, and still-punchy sea breezes at the summit. Shoulder seasons are the sweet spot for most hikers.↗↗

Beyond the Summit

The area around Motogoe is part of the Nippo Kaigan Quasi-National Park, and the coastal road known locally as the Bungo Kuroshio Line threads along the clifftops below the mountain. At its highest point, a roadside pullout offers its own sweeping sea view. A few kilometers along this drive takes you to Tsurumisaki, the easternmost point of Kyushu, where a lighthouse stands at the edge of rushing tidal currents. The Yonouzu and Kamae districts are threaded with spots linked to local romance legends. And after a morning on the trail, Saiki's port-side restaurants serve some of the freshest seafood in Kyushu, while the city's small public hot-spring bathhouses offer a perfect post-hike soak.↗↗↗

Practical Information

The mountain sits within the jurisdiction of Saiki City, Oita Prefecture. Trailheads are reached by car; public transportation options are limited (nearest JR station is Saiki, roughly twelve minutes' drive from the Kidatachi trailhead). All trailhead parking lots are free. Flush toilets are available at the Kidatachi and Urashiro trailheads, maintained by volunteer groups; simple portable toilets serve the Iroigaura lot. Handwash water at the Kidatachi trailhead is safe to drink. No entry fee applies.↗↗↗

The trails are graded moderate — the Kidatachi route is suitable for families with older children and even dogs, while the Iroigaura course's initial steep climb requires a basic level of fitness. In summer, bring ample water and insect repellent. Winters are mild but winds at the exposed summit can feel sharp; a wind layer is worth packing.↗↗
