Motogoeyama
Rising just 582 meters above the eastern coast of Kyushu, Mount Motogoe punches far above its weight. Ranked among the Kyushu 100 Famous Mountains, this modest peak on the border of Saiki City and the former Yonouzu village rewards hikers with one of the most dramatic coastal panoramas in all of Oita Prefecture — a sweeping 360-degree view that encompasses a saw-toothed ria coastline, the open Bungo Channel, distant islands, and on clear days the mountains of Shikoku beyond. The mountain was deeply beloved by Kunikida Doppo, one of Japan's most celebrated Meiji-era prose writers, and its well-maintained trails make it accessible to families, first-time hikers, and experienced trekkers alike. Whether you climb from the Saiki side through Kidatachi or approach from the fishing villages of Yonouzu, every route builds toward a summit where the land falls away and the sea takes over.
