AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Kawagemoguchi Gate Remains marks the site of a former gate in the Third Bailey (Sannomaru) of Yoshida Castle, one of the great strongholds of eastern Aichi Prefecture. Once the passageway to a long road lined with samurai estates, the gate is now the entrance to the Toyohashi City Museum of Art, tucked within Toyohashi Park in the heart of the city.↗↗
The marker is a quiet stop on a self-guided walking tour of the extensive Yoshida Castle ruins, where stone walls, dry moats, and earthen ramparts still trace the outlines of a fortress that changed hands repeatedly during the Sengoku period and was later expanded into a sprawling early-modern castle town under Ikeda Terumasa.↗↗

From Castle Gate to Museum Entrance
The name Kawagemoguchi (川毛口) refers to the road that once ran east from this gate through rows of samurai residential compounds toward the Akumi district near the Toyokawa River estuary. Visitors in the castle era would have passed through here on their way to and from those estates. Today the same threshold serves a more peaceful purpose: it has become the entrance to the Toyohashi City Museum of Art, a cultural center whose permanent collections cover the archaeology and history of Yoshida Castle and the wider Toyohashi region.
