Kawagemoguchi Gate Remains
Kawagemoguchi Gate Remains marks the site of a former gate in the Third Bailey (Sannomaru) of Yoshida Castle, one of the great strongholds of eastern Aichi Prefecture. Once the passageway to a long road lined with samurai estates, the gate is now the entrance to the Toyohashi City Museum of Art, tucked within Toyohashi Park in the heart of the city. The marker is a quiet stop on a self-guided walking tour of the extensive Yoshida Castle ruins, where stone walls, dry moats, and earthen ramparts still trace the outlines of a fortress that changed hands repeatedly during the Sengoku period and was later expanded into a sprawling early-modern castle town under Ikeda Terumasa.
