Tsuchiura Count Zeppelin Exhibition Hall

Why the Graf Zeppelin Came to Tsuchiura

The LZ 127's choice of Lake Kasumigaura as its sole Japanese stop was no accident. After World War I, Japan had confiscated a massive Zeppelin hangar from Germany as a war prize and relocated it to the Kasumigaura Naval Air Corps base. That enormous structure — the only facility on the entire round-the-world route large enough to house the airship's 236-metre hull for inspection and servicing — made this remote corner of Ibaraki prefecture an essential waypoint.↗↗

When the Graf Zeppelin appeared over Tokyo on the evening of August 19, 1929, it was a triumphant moment for a city still rebuilding after the Great Kantō Earthquake. The phrase "Have you seen the Zeppelin?" became a catchphrase overnight. Special trains ran from the capital, and by the time the airship departed across the Pacific on August 23, three hundred thousand people had made the pilgrimage to the lakeside.↗↗

What to See Inside

The exhibition hall occupies the ground floor of one of the historic storehouses in Tsuchiura's Machikado Kura ("Street Storehouse") gallery complex. Though compact, the space is packed wall-to-wall with rare photographs, informational panels, and artifacts documenting the 1929 visit and the broader history of airship travel.↗↗

The centerpiece is the genuine nose cone of the Zeppelin NT — the latest-generation airship descended directly from the Graf Zeppelin lineage, which flew over Japan between 2004 and 2010. When the Zeppelin company withdrew the craft from Japanese service, it entrusted the nose section to Tsuchiura as a tribute to the city's enduring love of airships. Suspended near the ceiling is a detailed model of the original Graf Zeppelin, and sections of actual airship envelope fabric are available for visitors to touch and feel.↗↗

A portrait of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin himself — who had passed away before the famous 1929 voyage — anchors the historical narrative. The volunteer-run Tsuchiura Zeppelin Club that operates the gallery also maintains a larger model of the Graf Zeppelin in the first-floor hall of nearby Kamejiri Plaza.↗

Walking the Airship's Length

A memorable detail: the old Nakajō-dōri street on which the Machikado Kura storehouses sit is almost exactly the same length as the Graf Zeppelin — roughly 236 metres. Strolling the street is a fun way to physically grasp the enormity of the airship that once filled the sky above this quiet town.↗

Immediately behind the exhibition hall is Kamejō Park, where cherry blossoms and autumn foliage make a visit especially rewarding in spring and fall. The historic restaurant Kagetsurō, a few minutes' walk away, was the venue that sparked Tsuchiura's enduring relationship with the Zeppelin Club; it houses its own mini-museum of airship artifacts within its traditional interiors.↗↗

Practical Information

The exhibition hall is free to enter and open daily from 10:00 to 16:00, with year-end closure from December 29 to January 3. It sits a 12-minute walk from JR Tsuchiura Station on the Jōban Line, or a two-minute walk from the Sakurabashi bus stop served by Kantō Railway. On-site parking is available for visitors arriving by car.↗↗

Allow 30–45 minutes for the gallery itself, then add time to explore the surrounding Machikado Kura storehouse complex and the old town streetscape. The combination of aviation history, preserved Edo-era architecture, and lakeside scenery makes for a distinctive half-day in Ibaraki.↗↗
