Tsuchiura Count Zeppelin Exhibition Hall
Tucked inside a traditional earthen storehouse along a preserved old-town street in Tsuchiura, the Tsuchiura Count Zeppelin Exhibition Hall tells the extraordinary story of the day the world's most famous airship touched down on the shores of Lake Kasumigaura. In August 1929, the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin — called Zeppelin Hakushu ("Count Zeppelin") in Japan — made a four-day stop here during its historic round-the-world voyage, drawing an estimated 300,000 visitors and igniting nationwide excitement. This free, volunteer-run gallery opened in 2005 to preserve that memory. Inside you'll find period photographs, a suspended model of the Graf Zeppelin, and — most strikingly — the real nose cone of the Zeppelin NT, the modern airship that carried the Count Zeppelin lineage over Japan from 2004 to 2010 and was gifted to Tsuchiura when it departed.
