AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Set in a former village inn on Diepenheim's tree-lined market square, Herberg de Pol is the cultural heart of this small East-Brabant-turned-Twente town. A multifunctional centre run by and for locals, it stages a year-round programme of theatre, live music, film, cabaret, literature and talks, while doubling as a cosy café, a tourist information point, a bookshop corner and the entrance to the public library.↗↗
What gives the place its charm is the mix of old and active: a bar in the historic inn serving coffee and homemade apple pie, a snug indoor theatre hall, a hidden open-air stage in a walled garden, and a separate monumental building across the square used for exhibitions and events. Whether you come for a single evening's concert or simply to sit over a slice of appeltaart, it is an easy, welcoming stop that offers a window into village cultural life in the Hof van Twente region.↗↗
A historic inn reborn as a cultural hub
The name gives the game away: Herberg de Pol began life as a herberg, a traditional Dutch inn, and traces of that past still shape the visitor experience. The Gelagkamer, or drinking room, is the warm, social core of the building, where you can drop in during the day for a coffee and a slice of homemade apple pie, or linger afterwards at the bar once a performance or meeting has ended. In fine weather the Gelagkamer spills out onto a small terrace facing the square, so an afternoon here feels very much like sitting in a village café.
