AT A GLANCE
Why go?
On a corner building in Dunedin North, where Queen Street meets Park Street, a towering Freddie Mercury reigns in full royal regalia. The seven-metre mural, painted by local artist Bruce Mahalski, turns the city's most literal pun—rock royalty on Queen Street—into a vivid, larger-than-life tribute to the legendary frontman. It has become one of Dunedin's favourite photo stops and a small symbol of the city's affection for music and street art.↗↗↗

Why the mural is here
The idea was as much a joke as a tribute. The side of the building faced the street named Queen, which made the choice of subject a no-brainer for building owner Allan Morrison, who commissioned the work. The irony runs the other way too: before Morrison called, Mahalski had been trying to track down the owner precisely because he thought the blank wall would make a great canvas. When that call came out of the blue, the commission was a match made in rock heaven.↗
