Wallendorfer See
Wallendorfer See is a broad, quietly striking lake on the outskirts of Merseburg near Schkopau in Saxony-Anhalt, and one of the most surprising transformations in Germany's mining-reclaimed lake country: a vast, clear-water lake that, not long ago, was a hole in the ground where brown coal was dug. Today its roughly 338-hectare mirror, ringed by floodplain forest and served by a 25 km network of cycle and walking paths, has earned a reputation as a peaceful "secret tip" for swimmers, cyclists, birders and anyone who simply wants open water and quiet.
