Kungsholm Fortress
Kungsholm Fortress (Kungsholms fort) sits on a small island off Tjurkö at the seaward gateway to Karlskrona, the great naval base on Sweden's Blekinge coast. Paired with the Drottningskär batteries on neighbouring Aspö, it has guarded this approach for more than 300 years and remains part of the Swedish armed forces today. What makes a visit special is the chance to walk an active military island you cannot reach on your own—exploring a storied fortification, a museum tracing its history, and the unlikely subtropical garden that flourishes behind its defensive walls.
