AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Kungsholm Fortress (Kungsholms fort) sits on a small island off Tjurkö at the seaward gateway to Karlskrona, the great naval base on Sweden's Blekinge coast. Paired with the Drottningskär batteries on neighbouring Aspö, it has guarded this approach for more than 300 years and remains part of the Swedish armed forces today.↗↗
What makes a visit special is the chance to walk an active military island you cannot reach on your own—exploring a storied fortification, a museum tracing its history, and the unlikely subtropical garden that flourishes behind its defensive walls.↗

A guarded gateway to a naval city
Karlskrona was founded as Sweden's principal naval base in the late 17th century, and the forts at its harbour mouth were built to keep enemy ships out of the anchorage. Kungsholm, together with the Drottningskär works on Aspö island, formed the outer line of that defence, watching over the narrow entrance for more than three centuries.↗
