AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Åmsjön is a quiet freshwater lake in Härnösand Municipality, lying just north of the village of Älandsbro on Sweden's High Coast in Ångermanland. Compact and shallow, it sits at 32 metres above the sea yet drains toward the coast only about 3.4 kilometres away, so its calm reeded shoreline belongs to the same post-glacial landscape of uplifted ground that built the famous Höga Kusten shore a few kilometres out.↗↗↗
What gives the lake its visitor appeal is its role as a local summer water spot: Härnösand's official Naturguide lists two designated swimming places on it, a general bathing site at Åmsjön itself and a swimming spot at the Nyåkersviken bay. Round that with gentle fishing banks and the open wetland-and-forest shoreline, and Åmsjön reads as an easygoing inland alternative to the saltier, busier High Coast beaches nearby.↗↗
A small inland lake with a coastal story
The lake covers roughly half a square kilometre and has close to 6 kilometres of shoreline, so it is small enough to circle its edges on foot yet big enough to feel like open water. It is a shallow bowl, with a mean depth of only about four metres, which means it warms quickly on summer days — exactly the kind of freshwater lake families and casual swimmers look for when the nearby sea is still chilly.
