AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Lake Ärtingen is a scenic, warm-water lake nestled between the small towns of Bengtsfors and Ärtemark in Dalsland, western Sweden. Ringed by rocky cliffs, forested hills, and gentle reed coves, it offers a quintessential Swedish lake experience — swimming from natural beaches, fishing for pike and perch, camping under the midnight sun, and exploring a landscape connected to the famous Dalsland Canal system.↗↗
A Quick-Warming Lake in Dalsland
At just 5.5 square kilometres, Ärtingen is a compact lake — large enough to feel open and wild, small enough that you can circle much of its 23-kilometre shoreline on foot or by kayak during a long summer day. Situated at 94 metres above sea level, it warms up remarkably fast in spring thanks to its shallower-than-average profile, making it one of the earlier lakes in the province to become inviting for a swim.↗↗
The shoreline tells a varied story. On the west and north, bare rock faces and cliff-like mountains rise straight from the water, creating dramatic backdrops. The southern and northern ends flatten into soft reed-lined coves where dragonflies hover and birds nest. The eastern shore is more settled, lined with summer cottages and a campground, giving the lake a lived-in, village-friendly feel.
