AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Perched on a rocky outcrop called Kyrkberget—Church Hill—in the small village of Junsele in Ångermanland, northern Sweden, the Junsele Hembygdsgård is an open-air heritage farmstead that preserves fifteen buildings from the 1700s and 1800s along with vast collections of rural folk artifacts. Founded in 1932 by a handful of locals determined to save the old farming culture before industrialization swept it away, the site has earned praise as the most beautiful heritage farm in the region.↗↗
The grounds are reached by a staircase cut into the granite hillside, and the centerpiece is the legendary Björntallen—the Bear Pine—a 21-meter tree that once saved a local man from a furious bear in 1862, an episode later immortalized in Swedish literature. Among the buildings you'll find a traditional farmhouse, storehouses, a bakehouse, a water-powered mill, and a summer pasture cottage, all furnished with tools, textiles, and everyday objects from centuries of northern Swedish rural life.↗↗
