AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked at the foot of the great extinct volcano that carries Khmer Phanom Rung, San Chao Pho Prasat Thong (ศาลเจ้าพ่อปราสาททอง) is one of Buriram's most beloved neighborhood shrines. Set in Tambon Ta Pek, Chaloem Phra Kiat District, right along the road that climbs up to Phanom Rung Historical Park, it is a living centre of local faith so closely tied to the area that the shrine's name appears in the district's own motto as "the seat of Chao Pho Prasat Thong."↗↗
Rather than a museum monument, this is an active place of worship where villagers and travellers come to ask for success, good health and exam results, leaving offerings and rooster statues before a painted statue of the guardian spirit. It makes an easy, atmospheric stop for anyone visiting the nearby Khmer sanctuary, combining spiritual life, a scatter of ancient-looking stone fragments and a good photo opportunity in one short visit.↗↗
