Aziz Phlippos Martyrion'u

The octagon and the rooms of the pilgrims

The heart of the sanctuary is a central room with eight sides, once crowned by a dome — the choice of eight being a deliberate reference to eternity. From each of the eight walls you would have passed through three arches, carried on marble columns with acanthus-leaf capitals, into a surrounding rectangular chamber. The church sat inside a larger square block ringed with around 28 rooms that opened to the outside and sheltered arriving pilgrims.↗↗↗

In those side rooms travellers performed incubation — sleeping within a healing sanctuary in the hope that Saint Philip would cure them or send prophetic dreams, a practice also known at other Byzantine shrines such as that of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Constantinople. Today the low walls, the geometry of the octagon and the scatter of columns read most clearly in the open stonework, where you can stand in the very centre of the design.↗↗

Finding the apostle's tomb

For centuries scholars expected Philip's burial chamber to lie beneath the centre of the octagonal hilltop church. In 2011 the Italian excavation team announced a surprise: the tomb had instead been found about 50 metres away, in a small three-aisled church raised in the 4th-to-5th centuries around a venerated 1st-century Roman grave with its own chapel.↗↗

Pilgrims entered that tomb church through a narthex and climbed marble steps to a platform built over the grave; a 6th-century bronze seal found at Hierapolis depicts the apostle between the domed martyrion on one side and the gabled burial church on the other, a tiny image of how the whole hilltop sanctuary once looked.↗↗

The climb and the processional way

Reaching the sanctuary was always meant to be a deliberate ascent. A monumental stairway runs along the south-east edge of the hill, some 70 metres long and 4 metres wide, built of irregular travertine steps and braced by a terrace wall that absorbs a drop of roughly 16 metres; tombs of the Roman necropolis flank the approach. Lower down, a large bridge of travertine blocks carries the route over from the city, the first stage of the processional road that led worshippers up to the apostle.↗↗

At the top of the steps you come out onto a small square where a ritual fountain, the ayazma, once allowed pilgrims to purify themselves before entering the holy precinct — a 6th-century travertine tower crowned by a marble oyster-shell niche and restored in 2014.↗

Those who make the climb are rewarded with the very views that keep it off most itineraries: open sky, a sweeping panorama over the plain, and a quieter, less crowded counterpoint to the theatre and the travertines below.↗↗

Visiting the Martyrion

The martyrion lies within the Hierapolis archaeological site near Pamukkale, some 17–18 kilometres north of Denizli city centre, and is reached on foot along a park path from the ancient theatre — roughly a 5-to-10-minute uphill walk that steepens in parts. Because it sits on higher ground and the way climbs, early morning or late afternoon is the most comfortable time to go, especially in summer heat.↗↗↗

The ruins can be visited as part of the Hierapolis/Pamukkale ticket, and the archaeological park is open every day, with its gates generally closing around 18:00 in winter and later in high summer; the hilltop sanctuary shares the hours and entry of the wider site, so it is worth checking the day's schedule on arrival. Local minibuses run to the Pamukkale/Hierapolis entrance from Denizli's bus station.↗↗↗

Note that this is open-air excavation terrain on a hill, reached by uneven steps and stony paths without a level, wheelchair-accessible entrance or parking. After Hierapolis, the brilliant white travertine terraces and the Antique Pool are right next door, making the martyrion a natural — and peaceful — capstone to a full day on the holy city's ridges.↗↗
