AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Madam Marta Cove—also written Madam Martha Bay, and known in older maps as Halikya—is Burgazada's most celebrated stretch of wild coastline, a pebbled cove of the Sea of Marmara fringed by pine forest and facing the island of Yassıada across the water. A generous walk from the ferry pier leads under the trees to a clear, calm bay that has long been the island's best-kept secret, prized for swimming, sunsets and a near-total absence of commercial beach clubs.↗↗↗
The cove is named for Madam Martha, a free-spirited, fiercely independent woman who lived on Burgazada in the twentieth century and treated this bay as her own—swimming here in every season, tending the shore, and making necklaces from the coloured stones she gathered from the sea. After she died, the islanders renamed what had been Fisherman's Cove in her memory, so that every visit to this quietly beautiful place carries a human story.↗↗↗
