AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Vanderhorst Mansion—more precisely the Elias Vanderhorst House—at 28 Chapel Street is one of Charleston's purest survivors of the antebellum Greek Revival, a stuccoed-brick villa raised on a high brick basement and fronted by fluted Doric columns. Built around 1832 for a scion of the rice-planting Vanderhorst dynasty, it remained in a single family for more than eighty years and today reads as a textbook of early-19th-century Charleston townhouse elegance.↗↗↗
It is private property, so the pleasure here is an outdoor, sidewalk appreciation of architecture and history rather than a tour inside. The Preservation Society of Charleston has placed a historic marker at the house, and its double curving stone-and-iron staircase, fanlit doorway and dogtooth pediment make it a favorite for architecture lovers wandering the Wraggborough neighborhood.↗↗
