AT A GLANCE
Why go?
East Beach sits at the far eastern tip of Galveston Island, a wide stretch of sand where the mainland shipping channel meets the open Gulf. Unlike the busier beaches along the Seawall, this park offers a relaxed atmosphere with sweeping views of cargo ships gliding into Galveston Bay, the 700-acre East End Lagoon Nature Preserve next door, and a coastal bird sanctuary teeming with rare species.↗↗
The beach is well-equipped with a waterfront pavilion, multiple sand volleyball courts (the largest collection on the Gulf Coast), showers, restrooms, and lifeguard coverage. A standout perk: East Beach is one of the few spots on the island where alcohol is permitted, and the on-site Cantina serves beachside meals and cocktails — even delivering to your spot on the sand.↗↗
A Nature Lover's Coastline
What truly sets East Beach apart is the living landscape around it. The park borders the East End Lagoon Nature Preserve, a 700-acre coastal prairie and lagoon system that hosts over 20 bird species in their natural habitat. During breeding season, the American Bird Conservancy monitors nesting shorebirds including piping plovers and red knots, with temporary fencing protecting sensitive areas. Birders and photographers find plenty to explore year-round, and the annual FeatherFest spring event brings inclusive birding workshops and guided walks accessible to visitors of all abilities through the national Birdability partnership.
