AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Walter's Wiggles is a famously steep stretch of the West Rim Trail in Zion National Park, where 21 tight switchbacks zigzag up a sheer wall of sandstone toward Scout Lookout. Built in the 1920s and named for Zion's first superintendent, Walter Ruesch, this engineering feat is the hard-won gateway to one of the park's most celebrated hikes, Angels Landing. Even if you stop at the top, the climb rewards you with a real sense of accomplishment and a sweeping look down into Zion Canyon.↗↗↗
Reaching the Wiggles means following the paved West Rim Trail from the Grotto, through the cool, shady depths of Refrigerator Canyon, and then grinding up the switchbacks that finally break you out at Scout Lookout. The section needs no permit, so anyone in reasonable fitness can tackle it, while hikers bound for the chained ridge of Angels Landing must win a slot in a National Park Service lottery to continue past this point.↗↗
