AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Rosamond Johnson Beach—often simply called Johnson Beach—is the emerald-water swim beach that anchors the Perdido Key area of Gulf Islands National Seashore, on Florida's Panhandle not far from the Alabama line. Set behind sugar-white Gulf sand and a line of scrubby dunes, it pairs a classic Florida beach day with the easy amenities of a well-run national park: shaded pavilions, showers, restrooms and broad parking, all just past a small entrance station.↗↗
The beach is a natural base for everything that makes Perdido Key appealing—swimming in calm, clear Gulf shallows, beach-combing the tide line, fishing from the water, or following an accessible boardwalk through the dune habitat. Because it sits inside the protected national seashore, the entry fee you pay here goes toward keeping the sand clean, restoring native dune plants and shielding the sea turtles and shorebirds that nest along this stretch of coast.↗↗

What the beach is like
Johnson Beach opens onto the wide, shallow Gulf of Mexico that gives this corner of the Panhandle its 'Emerald Coast' nickname—warm, clear water over pale quartz sand that stays gentle enough for a long, lazy swim. The main beachfront here is the most popular swim beach in the Perdido Key area, so on summer weekends the scene is family-oriented: kids paddling in the shallows, beach-combers working the wrack line, and sunbathers tucked under the pavilions. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and fishing is not allowed inside the flagged swim area, so the swimming zone stays clear.
