AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Five Kezar Ponds is a cluster of five interconnected ponds nestled in the forested hills of western Oxford County, Maine — Jewett Pond, Back Pond, Middle Pond, Mud Pond, and Little Mud Pond. Together they span 222 acres of calm water at an elevation of 572 feet, ringed almost entirely by natural woodland. The ponds sit at the headwaters of the Kezar River, in a landscape sculpted by the last ice age.↗↗
A 316-acre conservation reserve managed by the Greater Lovell Land Trust surrounds the ponds and offers a network of hiking trails leading to summit viewpoints overlooking the White Mountains. The area is a destination for anglers, foragers, snowshoers, and anyone seeking the quiet, undeveloped water country of rural Maine.↗
The Five Ponds
The Kezars are named after an early hunter who frequented these waters as well as nearby Kezar Pond in Fryeburg and Kezar Lake in Lovell. Each pond has its own character. Middle Pond is the largest at 92 acres with a maximum depth of 49 feet, while Back Pond covers 54 acres with a more intimate 1.4-mile shoreline and irregular, cove-rich edges. Mud Pond, Little Mud Pond, and Jewett Pond round out the group, collectively forming a watershed of 3,114 acres that feeds into the Kezar River.
