The “costs avoided” part matters.
An overnight bus might remove one hotel night. A scenic ferry might replace a separate sightseeing cruise. A city-center train could remove two airport transfers. A more expensive direct flight might save a full vacation day.
You do not need to assign a dollar value to every hour. You do need to recognize that losing six usable hours on a five-day trip is different from losing six hours during a six-month journey.
A flight search normally begins at the airport and ends at another airport.
