Same three hotels, same 11 nights, 30 combinations of departure date and city order. With live rates plugged into ChatGPT through the Fortrip MCP, the cheapest version came in $1,886 below the most expensive one. Here is the full data, plus how to install the plugin yourself.
ChatGPT is good at the shape of a trip. Ask it for 11 nights across Singapore, Phu Quoc and Bangkok and it will give you a sensible split in seconds. Ask which order is cheapest, or whether leaving a day later changes the bill, and it has nothing real to work with. It doesn't know what the Pan Pacific Singapore charges on January 14, or that a resort in Phuket is sold out on every date you'd want it.
We connected ChatGPT to Fortrip, a hotel pricing and booking plugin that runs as an MCP server, and asked it three questions about a January 2027 trip in Southeast Asia. Every price in this post is a quote Fortrip returned during the search, for two adults in one room, hotels only.

Sketch a brief. We come back with an itinerary that reads like a recommendation, not a checklist — and tell you what we’d change about it.
Try planning freeOTAs search inventory. Travel advisors coordinate. AI validates and optimizes the trip you already planned. In one anonymized multi-city case, the same three hotels and the same stay lengths ranged from roughly $6,150 to over $11,000 based only on the order the cities were visited. Here's which tool solves which problem — and how to use all three together.

Most travelers book their Peru hotels city by city, in whatever order feels logical. But for a 4-city itinerary with 6 hotels, there are 24 possible orderings — and the difference between the cheapest and most expensive is $93 in hotels alone, before flights. We ran every combination through ForTripAI's Hotel Optimization Agent. Here's what the data showed, including 10 routes that were eliminated entirely due to availability, and why adding domestic flights changed the ranking in a way the hotel data alone couldn't predict.
A language model learns from text written in the past. It can tell you that Phu Quoc gets busy around Lunar New Year or that Bangkok's luxury hotels are good value, but it can't quote tonight's rate, and if you push it for numbers it will produce plausible-looking ones. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard that lets an assistant like ChatGPT call outside tools in the middle of a conversation. The Fortrip MCP gives it three things it lacks on its own: live hotel prices, advice on how to structure hotel stays, and booking support.
Most of the value comes from repetition. Hotels quote a price for a specific check-in date and length of stay, so finding the cheapest four-night window in January for six hotels means 162 separate lookups (27 check-in dates × 6 hotels). Fortrip said as much in its first reply and offered to split the month into two halves. We asked for both. That scan took ChatGPT about 12 minutes, which is a long time to wait in a chat window and a very short time compared with doing it by hand.
The prompt: recommend two resorts each in Phu Quoc (Vietnam), Bali (Indonesia) and Phuket (Thailand) for a four-night stay in January, budget roughly $200–300 a night, then find each hotel's cheapest room type, price and dates for the month. Breakfast was not required.
Fortrip compared four-night stays for check-ins from January 1 to January 27, 2027:
| Destination | Resort | Cheapest 4-night dates | Cheapest room type | 4-night total | Per night |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phu Quoc | Salinda Resort Phu Quoc | Jan 17–21 | Deluxe Room | $1,093.23 | $273.31 |
| Phu Quoc | La Veranda Resort Phu Quoc – MGallery | Jan 13–17 | Deluxe Garden King Room | $955.60 | $238.90 |
| Bali | The Meru Sanur | Jan 3–7 (same price on other dates) | Tropical Suite | $928.77 | $232.19 |
| Bali | Bali Beach Hotel | Jan 1–5 | Deluxe Room | $548.03 | $137.01 |
| Phuket | Graceland Resort and Spa Phuket | Jan 26–30 or Jan 27–31 | Deluxe Pool View Room | $739.65 | $184.91 |
| Phuket | La Flora Resort Patong | Jan 26–30 or Jan 27–31 | Deluxe Pool View | $1,003.06 | $250.77 |
Four of the six landed inside the $200–300 range at their cheapest. Bali Beach Hotel and Graceland came in below it, which a budget-based recommendation would usually miss because it filters on typical rates, not on the cheapest window.
A few things stand out in the detail. Both Phuket resorts were cheapest in the last week of January, with two check-in dates tied. The Meru Sanur returned the same price on several dates, so for that hotel, flexibility buys you nothing and you can pick dates around flights instead. The Westin Siray Bay was the original Phuket pick, but it showed sold out on every date Fortrip checked, so it was swapped for La Flora. A model working from memory would have recommended it anyway.
Hold on to one row for later: Salinda's cheapest four-night window in January was January 17–21, at $1,093.23.
The setup: leave Hong Kong on January 13, 2027, spend 11 nights at three fixed hotels, check out January 24:
The question was which order gives the lowest hotel total. Fortrip noted that direct flights connect all three cities and Hong Kong, so all six orders are workable on paper, with January 2027 schedules still to be confirmed at booking.
| City order | Dates | Hotel total (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore → Phu Quoc → Bangkok | SG Jan 13–16; PQ Jan 16–20; BKK Jan 20–24 | $3,525.96 |
| Singapore → Bangkok → Phu Quoc | SG Jan 13–16; BKK Jan 16–20; PQ Jan 20–24 | $3,482.45 |
| Phu Quoc → Singapore → Bangkok | PQ Jan 13–17; SG Jan 17–20; BKK Jan 20–24 | $3,129.32 |
| Phu Quoc → Bangkok → Singapore | PQ Jan 13–17; BKK Jan 17–21; SG Jan 21–24 | $3,387.89 |
| Bangkok → Singapore → Phu Quoc | BKK Jan 13–17; SG Jan 17–20; PQ Jan 20–24 | $3,712.20 |
| Bangkok → Phu Quoc → Singapore | BKK Jan 13–17; PQ Jan 17–21; SG Jan 21–24 | $3,152.44 |
Same hotels, same number of nights in each, and a $582.88 difference between the best and worst order. The reason is simple once you see it: each hotel sets a different price for each night, and changing the order changes which nights you spend where.
The winning plan used Salinda's Deluxe Room (breakfast included, non-refundable), the Pan Pacific's Deluxe Panoramic View Room and the Athenee Guest Room with one king bed. The runner-up, Bangkok → Phu Quoc → Singapore, was only $23.12 behind, which matters once you add flights back in.
Next we asked Fortrip to rerun all six orders for departures from January 11 to January 15, keeping the 3 + 4 + 4 night split. That's 30 itineraries, each built from three separate hotel quotes.
| Departure | SG → PQ → BKK | SG → BKK → PQ | PQ → SG → BKK | PQ → BKK → SG | BKK → SG → PQ | BKK → PQ → SG |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 11 | $3,289.43 | $3,707.16 | $4,775.22 | $4,712.79 | $4,642.39 | $4,162.23 |
| Jan 12 | $3,689.81 | $3,430.73 | $4,029.70 | $3,887.04 | $4,632.03 | $4,748.45 |
| Jan 13 | $3,525.96 | $3,482.45 | $3,129.32 | $3,137.05 | $3,712.20 | $3,763.44 |
| Jan 14 | $2,889.20 | $3,763.06 | $3,057.04 | $3,296.48 | $3,829.32 | $3,194.90 |
| Jan 15 | $3,538.33 | $3,903.66 | $3,640.63 | $3,888.49 | $3,597.12 | $3,479.65 |
Reading across each row, the cheapest order for each departure date was:
| Departure | Cheapest order | Hotel total | Gap to that day's most expensive order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 11 | Singapore → Phu Quoc → Bangkok | $3,289.43 | $1,485.79 |
| Jan 12 | Singapore → Bangkok → Phu Quoc | $3,430.73 | $1,317.72 |
| Jan 13 | Phu Quoc → Singapore → Bangkok | $3,129.32 | $634.12 |
| Jan 14 | Singapore → Phu Quoc → Bangkok | $2,889.20 | $940.12 |
| Jan 15 | Bangkok → Phu Quoc → Singapore | $3,479.65 | $424.01 |
The overall winner was a January 14 departure, Singapore first:
Look at the Salinda line. January 17–21 at $1,093.23 is exactly the window Test 1 found to be Salinda's cheapest in the whole month. Starting in Singapore on January 14 with a three-night stay is what puts Phu Quoc on those dates. The two searches were run separately and arrived at the same price for the same window, which is a good sign the data is consistent.
The plan's Bangkok room has two twin beds rather than a king. The cheapest room type at a hotel often changes with the dates (the Pan Pacific also went from a Deluxe Panoramic View Room in Test 2 to a Deluxe Room here), so check the room before you treat the cheapest total as a like-for-like saving.
Phu Quoc → Singapore → Bangkok was the most expensive cell in the entire table on January 11 ($4,775.22) and the cheapest option on January 13 ($3,129.32). There is no cheapest order for this route in general, only a cheapest order for a given set of dates. Rules of thumb like "start with the beach" or "end in the big city" can't capture that, and neither can a model guessing from average prices.
Try it on your own trip. Install the Fortrip plugin in ChatGPT (five steps, below), then paste your hotels, number of nights and a few possible start dates. Get the plugin at mcp.fortrip.ai.
The January 13 row appears in both Test 2 and Test 3, from two separate searches. Four of the six totals matched exactly. Two did not:
| Order (Jan 13 departure) | First search | Second search | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phu Quoc → Bangkok → Singapore | $3,387.89 | $3,137.05 | −$250.84 |
| Bangkok → Phu Quoc → Singapore | $3,152.44 | $3,763.44 | +$611.00 |
That's what live inventory looks like. A cheaper room category can sell out, or a new rate can load, between one search and the next. Here the winner held, but the runner-up changed and the gap behind first place shrank from $23.12 to $7.73.
The practical takeaway: treat an optimization result as a shortlist. Re-quote the top two or three options right before you book, especially when they're close.
Every total in this post is hotel cost only. It doesn't include the flight from Hong Kong, the two flights between cities or airport transfers. When the top hotel options are within a few hundred dollars of each other, flight prices can narrow the gap or flip the result. We saw this in a Colombia case study where adding flights changed the margin between city orders.
Also worth checking before you book:
These steps are for ChatGPT's Work mode, where custom MCP servers are added as plugins.
Fortrip. Under Connection, select Server URL and paste https://fortrip.ai/api/mcp. The Authentication field should show OAuth.@Fortrip, then ask about hotel prices or hotel strategy, or ask it to make a booking.More details and updates are on mcp.fortrip.ai.
Start each prompt with @Fortrip, then swap in your own hotels and dates.
Cheapest dates for one hotel:
Find the cheapest 4-night stay at [hotel] for check-ins between [date] and [date], 2 adults, 1 room. Show the dates, room type and total.
Shortlist resorts by budget, then find their cheapest windows:
Recommend two resorts each in [destination A] and [destination B], around $[X]–[Y] per night in [month]. Then find each one's cheapest [N]-night dates and room type that month.
City order for fixed hotels:
I'm leaving [city] on [date] for [N] nights: [hotel 1] for [n] nights, [hotel 2] for [n] nights, [hotel 3] for [n] nights. Compare every possible order and list each one's dates and hotel total.
Order plus flexible departure:
Run the same comparison for departures from [date] to [date] and find the cheapest combination of date and order.
Not reliably. Without a connected tool, ChatGPT works from training data and general web knowledge, so any specific nightly rate it gives you is an estimate at best. A plugin like the Fortrip MCP lets it pull live quotes for specific dates during the conversation.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants call external tools and data sources. Adding the Fortrip MCP to ChatGPT gives the assistant access to live hotel prices, hotel strategy advice and booking support.
Hotels price each night separately, often with big swings around weekends, holidays and events. Changing the order changes which nights you spend at each hotel. In this test, the same three hotels for the same 11 nights ranged from $3,129.32 to $3,712.20 on a single departure date.
Often, yes, but how much depends on the hotels. Here, a one-day shift saved $240.12 against the best plan for the original date. In Test 1, The Meru Sanur returned the same price on several dates, so flexibility wouldn't have helped there.
Live rates change as rooms sell and new rates load. In our test, two of six orders changed by $250.84 and $611.00 between searches. Always re-check the top options just before booking.
No. Everything here is hotel-only. Flights and transfers need to be added to compare total trip cost, and they can change which option is cheapest.
A two-week date range for one route returns within a few minutes. Scanning every January check-in date for six hotels took about 12 minutes, because each date and hotel is a separate live quote.
MCP is an open standard, so other assistants that support custom remote MCP servers can use the same server URL. Check mcp.fortrip.ai for the apps currently supported.
If you already have a trip in mind, you have most of what a search like this needs: the hotels, the number of nights and a rough window. Install the Fortrip plugin, paste those into ChatGPT and see how far apart your own options are: https://mcp.fortrip.ai
