The hottest, rainiest stretch runs from June through September, when humidity stays above 80% and rain days peak at 16 to 19 per month. Winter months are dry and cool, with January and December offering the fewest rain days, though temperatures drop to around 10°C. For the most comfortable sightseeing, aim for late autumn or early spring.

Which area should I stay in in Beppu?

Stay near Beppu Station for easy access to trains, buses, and the port, with hotels like Amanek Beppu YULA-RE nearby. The Kannawa area, home to the Hells of Beppu and ryokan like Kannawaen, suits those focused on hot springs. Kitahama, along the coast, offers a relaxed seaside vibe with Hoshino Resorts Kai Beppu. For a hillside retreat with views, Kankaiji has Suginoi Hotel and Ryotei Matsubaya.

What are the must-see attractions in Beppu?

The Hells of Beppu are the top draw, with Umi Jigoku, Kamado Jigoku, and Chinoike Jigoku each offering distinct, vividly colored hot spring pools. For a broader view, take the Beppu Ropeway up Mount Tsurumi for sweeping coastal and mountain scenery. Beppu Park is a pleasant spot for a stroll, and the Yukemuri Observation Deck gives a classic view of the town's steam rising across the skyline.

What day trips can I take from Beppu?

From Beppu, you can take a full-day tour to Yufuin, a scenic hot spring town with a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful countryside. Another option is Himeshima, a small island known for its natural beauty and coastal walks. These tours cover the destinations directly, so you can enjoy a change of scenery from Beppu's urban onsen area.

How many days do I need in Beppu?

Plan 2 to 3 days in Beppu. In two days, you can visit the main Hells of Beppu sights like Umi Jigoku, Kamado Jigoku, and Chinoike Jigoku, plus the Beppu Ropeway and Beppu Park. A third day lets you add the Yukemuri Observation Deck and Beppu Tower at a relaxed pace. If you take a full-day tour to Yufuin or Himeshima, add one extra day.

Convenient location but disappointing overall experience. The main plus for Nogami Honkan is its good location: convenient for the station, parking facilities and getting around the area. However, the rooms feel old and musty with a stale smell that lingered the entire stay. The facilities are quite dated compared to the many newer, better-appointed hotels and ryokans with onsen nearby. What really soured our stay was their inflexible policy when we faced a medical emergency and needed to shorten our reservation. Despite explaining the situation, the hotel refused to make any adjustment and insisted on charging us for the full stay. This lack of compassion was very disappointing. While the location is decent, we strongly recommend considering other more modern and guest-friendly options in the area.

One of the best accommodations that I've experienced on my trip in Japan. Super clean with very nice onsen. I loved the served breakfast very much. |Staff didn't speak English, but there was an AI assistant that helped me with some questions. A thumb up for this modern approach and finally a proper use of AI!

Definitely an older building but it’s relatively clean aside from the mold that I noticed around the shower mirror. I’d say the location was good. They have breakfast that you can purchase the night before that’s traditional Japanese which was nice. I will say, the rooms (obviously) smell like Tatami mats so do be prepared as it does linger. The location is good, just the alleyway is not a lot of high foot traffic.

Nogami Honkan has a convenient location—an easy walk downhill from Beppu Station and surrounded by plenty of food options. It’s also within walking distance to Beppu Tower, where you can enjoy nice views of the city and the sea. We went during the day, but I imagine the night view would be beautiful too. Staying here gave us a feel of the quieter, local side of Beppu. While the town itself is calm with fewer people, tourist spots can still get busy with tour groups. However, compared to other traditional inns (ryokan) we’ve stayed in around Japan, the service here felt minimal. We didn’t get the warm or inviting welcome typical of Japanese hospitality. The room was quite dusty, the in-room shower was dated and run-down, and the road noise was noticeable even on level 4. The room had a smell when we first entered, and I had to use lavender disinfectant spray and essential oils to make it more comfortable. The sea view from the room was a plus, though.Facilities were basic. The private onsen costs 500 yen, while the public onsen is free, but both felt quite run-down and not very well maintained. There are vending machines on each floor, plus free water, coffee, and tea machines, which were convenient for our family of four.Breakfast was included and was one of the highlights. We enjoyed grilling our own fish and cooking our own eggs and toast right at the table with all the ingredients and utensils provided.Overall, it was an okay stay mainly for the location and local experience, but the condition of the rooms and onsens, along with the lack of warm service, made it feel below the standard of other Japanese inns we’ve visited.

Quite old and dated but still works. The onsen on the second floor is smaller than the one on first floor. Rooms are big compared to hotel rooms. Breakfast is good. Laundry service available. Parking not included. Coin parking in the back or in front if available.

This traditional ryokan truly hit all our expectations. The old-style architecture is full of character, yet everything was very clean and well maintained. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and the onsen experience was excellent. We especially appreciated the three private onsens available to book, which made the stay even more relaxing. Laundry facilities are also convenient at ¥300 per visit with no time limit. The neighborhood is another highlight, with plenty of great food options nearby. Also walking distance to a famous public onsen. Easily one of the best accommodation experiences we had on our trip.

The best stay of my 3 weeks Japan trip. If you are non-japanese and are looking to stay in Onsen Ryokan without worrying too much about etiquette, this place is for you. I'm not suggesting this place let you do whatever you want, this place explains the Japanese way really well, in english. They have English speaking staff that can answer any queries you have. The breakfast team explains what to do with the Japanese breakfast, do you don't feel like an idiot or uncultured. The breakfast itself is also really nice (if you like Japanese food that is). They serve Kabosu juice (citrus fruit that is local to the prefecture) with breakfast - the most refreshing juice. You pay one-off JPY300 (at the time of my stay) to use unlimited washing machine and dryer - which is super affordable and convenient. Nogami has 2 public onsens that they rotate for male and female - so you get to experience both. If you are not keen on the Japanese bathing ritual, they have 3 private onsens for a very reasonable price hourly rate. I have tried all-but-one of their onsens and they are super clean with good temperature. My family of 5 stayed in Family room and despite the initial worry of sleeping on futons, we had the best sleep (probably onsen before bed also contributed to our quality of sleep). The bathroom of the family room is SUPER spacious (if you stay in Japan hotels before - you know their bathrooms are tiny) with double vanities. The lounge is super cosy with tea coffee (hot and cold) available (free) at all times. I was very sad to check out from this Ryokan ....
