My Edinburgh Life

The best time to visit is May through September, when days are longest and temperatures reach the high teens. June is the driest month, while July and August are the warmest but also the rainiest. For the most settled weather, aim for May or June; the famous August festival is a draw, but expect more rain and crowds.

Stay in the Old Town for the Royal Mile, castle, and historic closes; it suits first-time visitors. The New Town, around George Street and Charlotte Square, is quieter and more elegant, with Georgian architecture and good dining. Haymarket is convenient for train links and has a local feel. The Balmoral Hotel and Kimpton Charlotte Square are in the New Town, while Cheval Old Town Chambers and Apex City of Edinburgh Hotel are in the Old Town.

Edinburgh Castle tops the list for its history and skyline views. The Royal Mile connects the castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, both essential for royal and old-town atmosphere. The National Museum of Scotland offers deep insight into Scottish culture and science. St Giles' Cathedral stands out for its architecture and central location. Holyrood Park provides a natural escape with Arthur's Seat for panoramic city views.

You can take full-day tours to Loch Ness and the Scottish Highlands, including Glencoe and Fort William, for dramatic scenery and history. St Andrews and the fishing villages of Fife offer coastal charm and golf heritage. Outlander locations tours visit filming sites, while the Hairy Coos tour focuses on Highland views and Highland cows.

Plan 3 to 4 days. In 3 days, you can see Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, the National Museum of Scotland, and St Giles' Cathedral, with time for Holyrood Park or the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Add a fourth day for a day trip to the Highlands or St Andrews, which needs an extra day beyond the city sights.
