Hotel Condal

The best time to visit Girona is from May to June and September, when temperatures are mild (23-29°C) and rain is less frequent than in spring. July and August are the hottest months, reaching 32°C, but still dry with only 6 rain days. The rainiest stretch is March through May, with up to 11 rain days, though it's not extreme. For pleasant weather and fewer crowds, aim for late spring or early autumn.

The Barri Vell, the old town around the cathedral, suits first-time visitors who want the medieval lanes and sights. The Mercadal district, across the Onyar river, is more residential and quiet, with local cafes. The Eixample, near the train station and Gran Via, is practical for short stays and easy transit. In the Barri Vell, the Hotel Nord 1901 and Ciutat de Girona are well placed; in Mercadal, the Hotel Gran Ultonia is a solid choice.

The Gothic Girona Cathedral has the widest single-span nave in the world, with grand steps leading to its facade. Pont de les Peixateries Velles, the red iron bridge over the Onyar, offers the classic postcard view of colorful houses. The Arab Baths, a 12th-century Romanesque bathhouse, are well preserved and atmospheric. Basílica de Sant Feliu houses early Christian sarcophagi and an unusual bell tower. Museu del Cinema showcases a unique collection of pre-cinema devices and film memorabilia.

You can take full-day tours to the Costa Brava coast, the medieval villages of Besalú and the Garrotxa volcanic zone, with Banyoles Lake. Tours also go to Figueres and the Dalí museums, including the House at Portlligat, and a combined trip to Girona and Besalú focusing on Jewish history. These are the main day-trip options from the city.

Two full days cover the main sights comfortably. See the Cathedral, the colorful Pont de les Peixateries Velles, and the Arab Baths on day one. Use day two for the Basílica de Sant Feliu, Sant Pere de Galligants, and the Museu d'Art de Girona. Add a third day if you want a day trip to Besalú or the Costa Brava.
