BlackBrick Sandton

The best time to visit Johannesburg is from May to September, during the dry winter months. These months have the least rain and lower humidity, with pleasant daytime temperatures around 17-25°C and cool nights. October and November are warmer but rain increases, while December through February are the wettest and most humid months. The dry, sunny weather in winter makes it ideal for outdoor sightseeing and safaris.

For first-time visitors, Sandton is the main business and shopping hub, with hotels like the Michelangelo Towers and Sandton Sun and Towers, and it suits those wanting easy access to restaurants and the Gautrain. Melrose Arch offers a walkable, upscale village feel with the African Pride Melrose Arch hotel, great for a self-contained stay. Westcliff, home to the Four Seasons, is a leafy, upscale residential area with views, ideal for a quieter, more relaxed base. Maboneng Precinct is a trendy, artsy district with galleries and cafes, best for travelers who want a more local, creative vibe.

Start with the Apartheid Museum to understand the city's history, then Constitution Hill for its role in human rights. Gold Reef City Theme Park offers entertainment and a look at the gold rush era. Visit Mandela's House in Soweto and the Hector Pieterson Memorial to connect with the anti-apartheid struggle. Maboneng Precinct is a lively arts and culture district worth exploring.

Day trips from Johannesburg include Pilanesberg National Park for a safari with the Big Five, the Cradle of Humankind for early human fossils, and Lesedi Cultural Village for a look at South African cultures. Tours also cover Soweto, including the Apartheid Museum and Mandela's House, for a deep dive into the city's history.

Plan 3 days for Johannesburg itself. Use day one for the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill, day two for Gold Reef City Theme Park and Maboneng Precinct, and day three for the Johannesburg Zoo, Zoo Lake, and the Botanical Gardens. If you want to visit Mandela's House and the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Soweto, add a fourth day. A day trip to Pilanesberg or the Cradle of Humankind needs an extra day on top of that.
