It is the greatest farmstay I have ever experienced. My parents love the place and my son even cried the day before he left the place because he loves this place too much. There are many many animals, the host is so friendly and kind to bring us around. They tried their best to make our stay comfortable~ I will definitely come back if I come for holiday in New Zealand again.

I had the most amazing stay at Cubby House! The hosts were so welcoming and happy to show me around the farm (loved all the animals!)! This was a truly unique experience and I can’t wait to come back to Cubby House my next visit. The house was very clean, comfortable, and had literally every kitchen amenity you’d need! It’s also conveniently located and just a few minutes drive into Kaikoura.

From the moment we booked Leanne’s Cubby Farm Stay, we knew it was going to be special—and it truly was. Leanne reached out right away with the most detailed and helpful guide, especially great for international visitors like us, with tips on everything from the farm to saving on groceries and fuel. She even picked us up from the airport and gave us a mini tour of Kaikoura—such a kind and thoughtful gesture. The stay itself was magical. We got to meet and pat all the farm animals while hearing sweet stories about them, which made the experience so personal and memorable. The house is clean, cozy, and full of quirky charm, decorated with artwork from past guests. It's fully equipped with everything we needed, from a super well-equipped kitchen (you could even froth your milk and enjoy the farm eggs), to games, a piano, and even torchlights for stargazing in the peaceful farm surroundings. This wasn’t just a place to stay—it became one of the biggest highlights of our New Zealand trip. Leanne’s warmth and hospitality touched our hearts deeply. We’ll miss this little paradise and will always carry it in a special place in our hearts.

Stunning hilltop location, with view even better than the photos! Amazing house, with fun, comfortable decor and all the amenities anyone could hope for (and kitchen better stocked than mine at home). A beautiful restful place for families, with the most amazing hosts anyone could hope for. Easy access to Kaikoura and all the activities. Leanne and Richard went out of their way to make sure we got in safe, had excellent directions, and local recommendations. But beyond that, they welcomed us to their farm, which was particularly special for our kids (bottle feeding animals! And playing with their puppy). I can’t imagine more welcoming and wonderful hosts, and very much hope to come back again for longer.

Amazingly quirky home from home. Loved our stay here, Leanne & Richard couldn’t have been more helpful, from having a fire waiting for us on a cold arrival day to a fridge full of goodies for our stay.

We had a very special stay at the Cubby House. Leanne was an amazing host. The house is a real treat and super homely. The cupboards are fully stocked as is the fridge!, everything super clean. We loved the house layout, comfy sofas, blankets and wood burner. Our kids loved the games and the excellent farm tour. We had a fab chat with Leanne and husband Richard. It was a really enriching visit. One of the very best stays we have had, and we’ve done a fair few across the world! Highly recommended.

This was an absolutely beautiful place to stay to explore Kaikoura and environs and also to relax and unwind after a few weeks traveling in New Zealand. A wonderfully stocked hilltop house all to myself with an awesome view of the South Pacific coast in front and mountains in back. The owners were gracious and helpful with excellent recommendations for things to do and places to visit and eat. I feel so lucky to have found this place and couldn’t have asked for more!

My wife and I stayed here for a few days and we wish that we had stayed longer! The property is enormous and has panoramic views of Kaikoura and the point. As it’s a working farm there are friendly animals all over the place. The house itself is fully stocked with food, games and entertainment options. Leanne and Richard were so accommodating, and so generous with showing us around the farm. Could not recommend enough!

Frequently asked questions about Kaikoura

When is the best time to visit Kaikoura?

The best time to visit Kaikoura is from December to February, when days are warmest at 20°C and the sea is calm for whale watching and dolphin encounters. March and April are also pleasant, with slightly cooler temperatures and fewer rain days. The rainiest stretch is December, with 15 rain days, while July and August are the coolest and wettest months, though still mild. For the driest, most settled weather, aim for late autumn, from April to May, when rain days drop to 11 and humidity is lower.

Which area should I stay in in Kaikoura?

Stay near the Esplanade along the coast for easy access to the beach, seal colony, and whale watch departures; it suits most visitors. The Hapuku area, north of town, offers a quieter, more scenic setting with lodges like Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses and Cubby House Stay. The Adelphi Terrace and Old Beach Road area is a central, convenient base with B&Bs and motels like Bendamere House and Kaikoura Cottage Motels.

What are the must-see attractions in Kaikoura?

Whale Watch Kaikoura is the top draw for spotting sperm whales and other marine life. Encounter Kaikoura offers a chance to swim with or watch dusky dolphins. Ohau Point Lookout and Point Kean Viewpoint give dramatic coastal views, while the Kaikoura Seal Colony lets you see fur seals up close. The Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway is a scenic route linking many of these sights.

What day trips can I take from Kaikoura?

The full-day tours from Kaikoura go to Christchurch, where you can join a whale watch or swim with dolphins excursion. These tours are based in Kaikoura itself, so they don't cover other destinations. For a classic day trip, head to the nearby Marlborough wine region or the Abel Tasman National Park for coastal walks and beaches.

How many days do I need in Kaikoura?

Plan 2 to 3 days. In two days, you can do a whale watch, visit the seal colony, and walk the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway. Add a third day for the Kaikoura Lookout and EcoZip Adventures, or a day trip to swim with dolphins, which needs an extra day.
