Breakfast: Several guests note that breakfast is not included, despite some listings suggesting otherwise, so it's best to confirm what's offered.

We asked for a quadruple room. We got 2 separate rooms. Luckily our kids are old enough... One if the rooms had no bathroom, we needed to go across the landing to the other room. Both had no air conditioning which is really bad in july as the rooms were located on the very last floor, an attic right under the wooden roof. The roof comes down really close over the bed and in most of the room you cannot even stand. The window in our room was super small and at floor level meaning no air circulation (a vintage noisy ventilator had to remain switched on all night). Second room had two small windows, also at floor level. All the windows needed to remain open and so did the doors of the 2 rooms, to allow us to breathe ( still, heat radiating from the roof all night long). This means noise and light from the road and noise from the rest of the house as the doors that we kept open are those that connect to the house’s stairs, onto which the other rooms open. There may be better rooms in the house but ours were totally overpriced for the comfort level.

The agreed time of reception was delayed time over time and with the check-inn the agreed price was changed. ‘Go find another place if it’s not okay’. That’s not how you treat a pilgrim in need of a place to stay in a city that’s completely booked due to the music festival. The room was simple and very poor decorated for this price (€ 110 for 1 night) and surprisingly there was not even breakfast. The light near the bed was giving more light than the sole bulb in the big light. Positive was the airco and the location. But endresult: a total rip-off, no service and not worth wearing the name of the great composer Puccini

Awful experience - wouldn't stay there ever again even if I was paid. Booking not honoured had to move properties. No breakfast even though it was stated as B & B. I had confirmation of my booking but because it wasn't in their computer they wouldn't honour it. Completely ruined our birthday and anniversary treat and the concert we were going to attend. Avoid at all costs

Nice quiet house, clean and simple, excellent host Giuseppe. Couple of minutes walk from Porta Donato, about as close as you can get to the centre of Lucca at a reasonable price.

Frequently asked questions about Lucca

When is the best time to visit Lucca?

For pleasant weather, visit in May or September, when days are warm and rain is moderate. July and August are the hottest months, with peaks around 31°C. November is the rainiest, with 15 wet days. June offers a drier stretch with fewest rain days. The Lucca Summer Festival, held in summer, is a well-known music event.

Which area should I stay in in Lucca?

Stay inside the historic center for proximity to Piazza dell'Anfiteatro and the Duomo. The area around Via Fillungo suits shoppers and those wanting boutiques, with A Palazzo Busdraghi there. Near Piazza Napoleone, you are close to sights and quiet streets, where Palazzo Dipinto sits. For a green, slower stay, the area near the Mura di Lucca (the city walls) works well, with Lucca in Villa San Donato nearby.

What are the must-see attractions in Lucca?

The must-sees start with Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, the oval square marking the old Roman arena. Piazza Napoleone is the city's main gathering square. The Duomo di San Martino holds the revered Volto Santo, while Guinigi Tower offers rooftop views from its famous holm oaks. Walk the Mura di Lucca, the well-preserved Renaissance walls, and pass through Porta San Pietro, a grand historic gate.

What day trips can I take from Lucca?

The full-day tours from Lucca head to Cinque Terre, a string of five colorful cliffside villages with hiking trails and sea views. Other tours go to Siena and San Gimignano, two medieval Tuscan hill towns, with a stop in the Chianti wine region. You could also plan your own trip, but these organized outings cover the main highlights.

How many days do I need in Lucca?

Two days in Lucca let you see the main sights: the elliptical Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, the Duomo di San Martino, the Guinigi Tower with its rooftop trees, and a walk along the Mura di Lucca. Add a third day if you want to take a full-day tour to Cinque Terre or Siena and San Gimignano, since those leave from Lucca. That gives you a relaxed pace with time for a coffee in Piazza Napoleone.
