My husband and I stayed at Sextantio for two nights, and we were absolutely delighted with our experience. The restoration of the cave dwellings and the preservation of the traditions and culture of the people who once lived in these tuff caves are truly remarkable. Throughout the hotel, there are countless thoughtful details that tell this fascinating story. Every member of the staff was exceptionally kind, welcoming, and attentive. It is clear that every aspect of the service is designed with one goal in mind: providing guests with the best possible experience. The views from the rooms, as well as from the restaurant and aperitivo area, are breathtaking. Looking out over the Gravina canyon is simply unforgettable. Our room was spotlessly clean, and housekeeping was provided twice a day. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable. The room was also equipped with a fan, a minibar, and an electric kettle. Breakfast was wonderful, with excellent quality and variety. The restaurant itself is located inside a cave, creating an unique and beautiful atmosphere. We truly loved every moment of our stay at Sextantio!

Quite an experience, definitely something to try. The caves have an authentic middle ages vibe with a sprinkle of glam in shape of modern comfort. The staff is very friendly and proactive. They also care about sustainability and have no plastic policy. My wife wasn't feeling well and the staff went out of their way to support us by helping with taxi and calling pharmacy in the middle of the night. Breakfast was also great.

It is undeniable that the rooms and location are one of a kind. They have done an outstanding job of outfitting these rooms to fit their time period but be luxoriuos. However, there is one glaring issue with the rooms. They have set up their heating and cooling system so that is cannot be individually controlled. With the temperature swinging from highs of 50s to highs of 70s (F) they chose to keep the heating on. The heating included a constant heated floor which made the room nearly 80F with outside highs of 72 F. When faced with this issue some staff provided the excuses about the system and others worked hard to identify solutions of additional fans with extension cables to bring them in front of the door to blow cool air into the cave. This brought the temperature down low enough for sleep each night. However, this is very disappointing that this is required for a hotel of this price and caliber. The staff was very polished and was well spoken in English which is nice especially when paying the prices you do. The breakfast was the most delicious one we had with the most outstanding pastries and breakfast pizzas. Overall, the hotel is very special with oustanding service and a delicious breakfast there are some considerations to keep in mind if traveling during the shoulder seasons for weather.

We had a wonderful stay with my daughter! Everything was perfectly arranged, we felt taken care from the moment we arranged a booking. Breakfast in the cave was amazing with local products! Denise (surprisingly Polish speaker) was an excellent guide showing us around and explaining every detail! If you look for a real experience without artificial add ons that’s the place!

Absolutely wonderful hotel in a perfect location in Matera. Staying in one of the original (now restored) caves was a truly special experience. On top of that Sextantio is just such a luxurious and wonderful place. I don‘t think I have ever stayed in a more unique and at the same time luxurious place. The beds are extremely comfortable, the caves are super clean and despite them being a cave have all the amenities one could ask for - in our case (cave no. 3) we even had a huge bathtub. The staff is incredibly attentive and simply wonderful and you can really feel that they are proud of the beautiful space they have created. Upon arrival we even got a short tour of the property including an introduction to the history of the place. The breakfast buffet was the best I ever had in a hotel. All the cheeses you can dream of (Burrata, Ricotta, Pecorino…) a wide selection of fresh and delicious local fruit, homemade focaccias and breads, cakes, eggs and so much more. And Brunella and Sara and all of the team (who make all the delicious food themselves!) are just the cherry on top - they made us feel like family. I definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Matera! PS: Since this was mentioned in few reviews: we did not find the caves too dark nor were they damp. They were indirectly lit and it was very pleasant to sleep in them - and you can always ask for more lights. However, if one wants daylight, hardwood floors and a view, staying in a cave is obviously not the right choice.

Such an amazing experience. We stayed in one of the cave rooms - an incredible atmosphere with excellent facilities. The breakfast was delicious and served in the old chapel. Service was excellent and we did enjoy delicious Campari spritzers on the terrace overlooking the river - just magical . Would thoroughly recommend

This is much more than a hotel !! The owner has embraced preserving amazing spaces with a drive toward authenticity with luxury over modern design. The attention to detail is amazing whether the linens, furnishings or local specialities at breakfast. This is a place to call home as you explore matera and I would for sure stay at least two nights. The staff is great. Each room is different! A great base to explore town alleys and hiking trails. So so glad stayed at your hotel aka historical restoration.

This hotel exceeded every expectation! The customer service was excellent and everyone was very friendly. They assisted us with any need or request we had. Our room was very clean and the daily room service kept it well stocked. It is a cave so we had to get used to the uneven floors and lighting dimmer than what we are accustomed to, but we wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. It was such an authentic experience and a very peaceful setting. And as wonderful as the room was, the breakfast was out of this world!! Even though they had to put it in a temporary room due to remodeling the regular breakfast area, the ladies that prepared and served did an AMAZING job! If we are ever able to be back in Matera, I wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else. Thank you, Sextantio for helping make our holiday so memorable!
