The best times to visit are April, May, October, and November, when temperatures are mild and rain is less frequent. June brings the start of the rainy season with higher humidity, while July and August are the hottest and rainiest months. Winter is cold but dry, with clear skies and fewer crowds. For the most comfortable sightseeing, aim for spring or autumn.
Stay near Matsumoto Station for easy access to trains and buses; the Fukashi and Central areas have hotels like Onyado Nono Matsumoto Natural Hot Spring and Tabino Hotel Lit Matsumoto. For a traditional feel, the castle area around Ote and Shiroyama is close to Matsumoto Castle and Nawate Shopping Street, with Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu there. For a hot spring experience, Asama Onsen offers ryokan stays like Hoshino Resorts Kai Matsumoto and Hotel Tamanoyu, a short ride from the center. Utsukushigahara Onsen suits those wanting a quiet mountain retreat, with Izumiya Zenbe and Oiwakeya Ryokan.
Matsumoto Castle is the city's iconic six-story wooden keep, a national treasure. The surrounding castle park is great for a stroll, especially with the Alps as a backdrop. Daio Wasabi Farm offers vast wasabi fields and a unique water mill. Kamikōchi is a stunning alpine valley with the Kappabashi Bridge crossing the clear Azusa River. The Former Kaichi School is a beautiful Meiji-era Western-style building.
Full-day tours from Matsumoto head to Kamikochi, a highland valley with the Kappabashi and Myojin bridges, and to Narai-juku, a preserved post town on the Nakasendo route. Tours also go to Mount Fuji and to Nagano for the snow monkeys. For a classic day trip, consider the Utsukushigahara Highland, a scenic plateau reachable by ropeway.
Two days in Matsumoto lets you see Matsumoto Castle and its park, stroll Nawate Shopping Street, and visit the Former Kaichi School. Add a third day for a trip to Kamikōchi or Daio Wasabi Farm, which are outside the city center. If you want to include Utsukushigahara Highland or Matsumoto City Alps Park, plan for a fourth day.
