B&B Ponte a Nappo

June and September are the most pleasant months, with warm days around 26-29°C and only 7-9 rain days. July and August are the hottest (32°C) but driest, with 5-6 rain days, so they work if you like heat. May has the most rain (13 days) and November is close behind (12), so skip those if you want dry sightseeing. Spring and autumn offer milder temperatures and fewer crowds than peak summer.

Stay in the historic center near Piazza della Cisterna for the towers and medieval atmosphere, ideal for first-timers. The countryside around San Gimignano, like the hills near Sovestro or Santa Lucia, suits those wanting quiet views and agriturismo stays. The area around Porta San Giovanni is convenient for arriving by bus and walking into town. Hotel L'Antico Pozzo is in the center, while Tenuta Sovestro and Agriturismo Il Segreto di Pietrafitta are in the countryside.

Start at Porta San Giovanni, the grand medieval gate that sets the tone. Piazza della Cisterna is the heart of town, with its famous well and tower-ringed square. Climb Torre Grossa in the Palazzo Comunale for the best views over the towers and countryside. Torre e Casa Campatelli offers a look inside a restored medieval tower house. Fonti Medievali shows the old public washhouses, and Parco della Rocca gives a quiet green break with panoramic views.

The full-day tours head into Chianti, where you can visit wineries, ride through the hills, or see castles. Horseback riding tours also explore the Tuscan countryside around the area. If you prefer the city itself, Siena and Florence are well-known day trips from San Gimignano.

Plan for 2 full days to see the town without rushing. One day covers Porta San Giovanni, Piazza della Cisterna, the Torre Grossa climb and the Fonti Medievali. A second morning fits Torre e Casa Campatelli and a slow walk through Parco della Rocca. Add a third day if you want to take one of the Chianti wine or castle day tours, which leave from San Gimignano.
