Socha
In the quiet town of Pilníkov, tucked into the Giant Mountains Foothills just southwest of Trutnov, a single weathered statue stands beside the railway line at Za Tratí. This is Socha — the Statue of St. John of Nepomuk — one of the two historical landmarks the town itself lists among its sights. St. John of Nepomuk statues dot the Czech landscape like bookends along old roads and river crossings, and Pilníkov's is a small, dignified example of that centuries-old tradition of placing a protective figure where travellers and commuters pass. Pilníkov itself is the bigger reason to make the detour. With a history stretching back to 1357, a well-preserved urban monument zone, and the striking late Baroque Church of the Holy Trinity anchoring its town square, this town of about 1,200 people rewards a slow wander. The statue near the tracks fits naturally into that stroll — a brief, contemplative stop on the edge of a compact historic centre.
