Pěchotní srub T-S 54 "Nad dráhou"

A fortress line against a much stronger enemy

T-S 54 belongs to the network of Czechoslovak frontier fortifications raised in the second half of the 1930s along the border with Germany, here within the Trutnov construction sector and the Petříkovice closing of the defensive line. Planning of this particular blockhouse began in May 1936, when officers of the Directorate of Fortification Works surveyed the terrain. The original idea was almost unusual: the bunker was to sit deep in the valley floor, far behind the main line, near a sharp road bend at the western edge of Petříkovice, tasked with sweeping fire along the road and railway that ran up from the German frontier. That forward-facing arrangement was later judged atypical for Czechoslovak doctrine, so the design was switched to a standard layout for flanking fire and the blockhouse was relocated to the heart of the fortress closing, high above the railway tracks.↗↗

The concrete was poured in a single burst between 5 and 9 May 1938 by the Prague firm Litická a.s., supervised by construction officer Lt. Bohumil Synek. Like almost all of the Czechoslovak fortifications, the work was overtaken by the Munich crisis and the dismemberment of the republic: T-S 54 was structurally finished and its electrical installation just begun when the crews had to abandon it. The museum's presentation lets that unfinished, bittersweet history speak for itself.↗

Inside the concrete giant

The blockhouse is a class-II hardened structure—an isolated, left-wing infantry strongpoint built in two storeys from roughly 1,064 cubic metres of reinforced concrete and designed for a garrison of 24 men (one officer, seven NCOs and sixteen other ranks). Its firepower was concentrated in the main firing arm: a 47 mm vz.38 anti-tank gun paired with a heavy machine gun, plus a twin heavy-machine-gun mount, all trained to the west along the valley approach. Life underground was engineered to be self-sufficient, with two rows of air filters, a mechanical ventilation system and its own drilled well plunging 58.2 metres into the rock.↗↗

On the roof the two steel cupolas once stood as the bunker's eyes: a 26.5-tonne light-machine-gun dome on the left and a 21.5-tonne heavy-machine-gun dome on the right, both manufactured in Czech works and fitted in the summer of 1938. After the war the occupiers ripped the cupolas out for scrap, and the torn-out mounts you see today are a tangible reminder of what happened when the fortifications fell into German hands. Walking the restored interiors, the entry, combat and service sections, the original well and the concrete walls give a vivid sense of how cramped, mechanical and self-contained a frontier fortress really was.↗↗

The people keeping it alive

T-S 54 is not a polished state institution but a grassroots heritage project. It is cared for by KVH Petříkovice, z.s., a club of enthusiasts passionate about the First Republic's fortifications and army, who have spent years reconstructing the bunker and opening it, room by room, gradually to the public. Their stated ambition is to bring the object back to the condition it would have reached once fully completed and equipped in 1939, and to crown the work, together with the municipality, with an educational trail linking the nearby fortification objects and surviving anti-tank obstacles.↗

There is a personal heart to the project too: the restoration is dedicated to the memory of the club's late friend Jan Krinke, who gave much of his final years to the blockhouse. That volunteer spirit is what makes the visit feel intimate and genuine rather than institutional—and the kind, on-the-spot explanations from the restorers are a large part of the experience.↗

Planning your visit

The blockhouse sits on the edge of a meadow above the railway near Petříkovice in the Trutnov district of northeastern Bohemia, around 446 metres up, in the foothills that make this corner of the country good for combining a heritage stop with a walk. It is treated as a museum and, by visitor accounts, is perfectly suitable for children, especially young ones fascinated by bunkers, guns and military machinery.↗↗

Because this is a small, volunteer-run site that has been opening progressively rather than a fixed-schedule attraction, do not assume you can simply turn up: opening times are tied to the availability of the KVH Petříkovice restorers. Before setting out, check the museum's own website and the posted opening arrangements, or contact the club directly, to confirm when the doors are open and whether a guided look-through is being run—these on-site briefings from the people doing the restoration are well worth timing your trip around.↗↗

Wear sturdy shoes for the meadow approach and the concrete interiors, and allow time to walk the surrounding area to spot the anti-tank obstacles and other traces of the old frontier line that the club hopes to weave into a proper educational trail.↗
