AT A GLANCE
Why go?
A bold granite sculpture that breathes water in rhythmic pulses, the fountain on Masarykovo náměstí is Jindřichův Hradec's modern centerpiece—a work of public art that stirred passionate debate before becoming the town's most popular meeting point on the upper square.↗↗
Carved from warm red Ruprechtice granite and designed by academic sculptor František Häckel, the fountain takes the form of two polished semicircles creating a stone plate with cascading bowls. A geyser of water erupts through a central fissure at timed intervals, fills the bowls, and overflows in a continuous, meditative cycle.↗

A Sculpture of Stone and Water
The Masarykovo náměstí fountain is first and foremost a sculptural statement. Academic sculptor and restorer František Häckel (1937–2011), who lived in the nearby village of Jindřiš, designed a form of two polished semicircular granite arcs with a gap between them. Together they create something resembling a shallow plate with nested bowls of different depths. From the central groove, a roughly one-metre-high geyser erupts at regular intervals, cascades through the bowls, and overflows back down to the square.
