AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Fairytale Forest — Sprookjesbos in Dutch — is the heart and soul of Efteling, the beloved theme park in Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands. A 15-acre woodland path lined with 25 enchanting scenes from classic fairy tales, it was the attraction that started it all: opened on 31 May 1952, it transformed a humble nature park into what is now one of Europe's most visited theme parks. Efteling itself calls it 'the largest living storybook,' and few descriptions could be more fitting.↗↗↗
Wandering the mossy paths beneath tall trees, visitors encounter living dioramas of stories by the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Charles Perrault: Sleeping Beauty's ivy-covered castle, Little Red Riding Hood at Granny's door, the witch's candy house in Hansel and Gretel, and the ever-watchful Long Neck peeking through the foliage. Every scene is designed in the distinctive artistic style of Anton Pieck, whose nostalgic, detailed illustrations give the forest its unmistakable Old World charm.↗↗
