AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Inside a low building on Voldgaten in Gamlebyen Fredrikstad, the Gamlebyen Model Train Centre (Gamlebyen Modelljernbanesenter) hides what is billed as Scandinavia's largest model railway. A 400-square-metre landscape unfolds across some 2 km of track, where a computer-controlled system keeps roughly 30 train sets and dozens of locomotives moving through miniature countryside, towns and a faithful 1:87 recreation of the fortified old town itself.↗↗↗
Built and expanded over many years by dedicated enthusiasts, the centre has become one of Fredrikstad's most popular attractions and a guaranteed hit with children and train fans of any age. It also has a railway cafe and a hobby shop, so a visit fits naturally into a day spent exploring the surrounding ramparts and cobbled lanes of Gamlebyen.↗↗↗
