AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tvetervann is a compact forest lake in the Skjeberg woodlands of Sarpsborg, Østfold, beloved by locals for its scenic 7-kilometre shoreline walk. The lake sits at 79 metres elevation, stretches 1.8 kilometres, and covers 1.14 square kilometres—a modest body of water with an outsized reputation as a day-trip destination in southeastern Norway.↗↗↗
What gives Tvetervann its distinctive character is a remarkable layer of industrial heritage hidden in the woods: a set of early-1900s dams and a charming old pump house that once sent drinking water through a 20-kilometre pipeline to the city of Fredrikstad. Today, with those restrictions lifted in summer 2025, the lake opens up as a place for swimming, fishing, walking, and trail biking in a landscape where human engineering and Norwegian forest meet.↗↗↗
The Lakeside Walk
The signature experience at Tvetervann is the full circuit around the lake, a 7.2-kilometre round-trip hike that takes roughly two hours with a gentle total elevation gain of 72 metres. The trail follows the water's edge for most of its length, threading between pines and birches with the lake appearing and disappearing through the trees. Hikers describe it as easy-going and well marked, though some route-finding attention is needed at the southern end where the path briefly follows a gravel road.
