AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Furusjön is a gently winding forest lake in Dalsland, southwestern Sweden, best known for its pristine sandy beach and its position on the legendary Dalsland Canal waterway. Rated 'excellent' in consecutive years of official water-quality testing, it draws families seeking a refreshing dip in crystal-clear shallows, and anglers hoping for perch in the reeds.↗↗
With a maximum depth of only 16 meters and a shoreline stretching just over six kilometers, Furusjön is intimate enough to feel entirely on foot or paddle. Its catchment is nearly 60 percent forest and a quarter of it is open water — a ratio that gives the lake a deep sense of seclusion despite being easily reached from the E45 highway.↗
A Swimming Lake with a Proven Track Record
The public bathing site at Furusjön has earned ★★★ Excellent classification in three consecutive bathing seasons (2023–2025), and Swedish water authorities report no risk of cyanobacteria or algal blooms. The site features a sandy beach with a sand bottom, a large grass area for sunbathing, a floating pontoon bridge with a bathing raft about 40 meters out, changing cabins, and a simple dry toilet. Water temperatures average around 20°C through the summer months of June through August.
