A Forest Lake in the Småland Highlands
Käringasjön lies in Byarum parish in Vaggeryd Municipality, Jönköping County, within the Småland landscape. It belongs to the South Swedish Highlands ecoregion — an area of gently undulating terrain clothed mostly in spruce and pine forest. The lake covers 0.42 square kilometres with a shoreline of nearly four kilometres, a mean depth of just 3.7 metres, and a maximum depth of 10 metres. Its waters drain into the River Lagan, which eventually reaches the Kattegat coast 211 kilometres to the west.↗
The surrounding catchment is dominated by woodland — roughly two-thirds forest — giving the lake a secluded, unspoiled character. The fishing management area that includes Käringasjön describes its lakes as set within a 'wilderness-toned coniferous forest environment,' and the presence of red-throated diver and osprey signals healthy water and relatively undisturbed shores.
