AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Mellantjärnen is a small, tranquil forest lake tucked into the woodlands near Malingsbo, in the Söderbärke area of Dalarna, Sweden. At roughly six hectares, this classic "skogstjärn" (forest tarn) has earned a devoted following among fly anglers, who prize it as one of Sveaskog's well-managed put-and-take waters stocked with rainbow trout.↗↗↗
What sets Mellantjärnen apart is its combination of intimate scale and serious fishing culture. Fly fishing only, one rod per permit, no boats—these rules keep the shoreline uncrowded and the atmosphere peaceful. The lake sits between neighbouring waters Lilla Djurlången and Lövtjärn, forming part of a cluster of fishing tarns in the Malingsbo-Kloten area that draw visitors from across central Sweden.↗↗
A Forest Tarn Built for Fly Fishing
Mellantjärnen sits at an elevation of roughly 290 metres in gently rolling Dalarna forestland. Its compact size means every stretch of shoreline is within a short walk, and the surrounding spruce and birch woodland creates the sheltered, mirror-still conditions that make small Swedish tarns so appealing to wade and bank anglers. The lake is managed by Sveaskog, Sweden's largest state-owned forestry company, which classifies it among its "pink" put-and-take waters in the Malingsbo-Kloten fishing district—a designation meaning rainbow trout are regularly stocked here.
