AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Övre Gävjan is a small, shallow forest lake sitting at 131 metres above sea level in Skinnskatteberg municipality, deep in the woodland of western Västmanland's Bergslagen region. Barely half a square kilometre across with a shoreline of just under five kilometres, it is the kind of low-key tarn that rewards visitors who come for still water, coniferous silence and a quiet line in the shallows rather than grand scenery.↗↗
The lake's real character is that of a working, monitored fishery: it is part of the Gävjan chain drained by the Gisslarboån, and the county fishing and water-monitoring records list perch, pike, ide and roach among its catches. For an angler in Bergslagen, that makes Övre Gävjan a pleasant, unshowy stop in a municipality laced with 244 lakes and streams.↗↗↗
A quiet Bergslagen forest lake
Övre Gävjan – "Övre" simply meaning "upper" – lies within the Skinnskatteberg socken in the landscape of Västmanland. Measurements describe a small, lowland lake: an area of about 0.5 square kilometres, a mean depth of 2.7 metres and a maximum of just 6.3 metres, set at 131 metres elevation. Its gentle depth and short 4.9-kilometre shoreline give it the calm, intimate feel of a tarn rather than a great Bergslagen sjö.
