AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Säfstjärn is a small, wood-fringed lake tucked into the forests around Säfsen and Fredriksberg in southern Dalarna — a gentle, family-friendly hiking spot rather than a summit challenge. Easy trails thread through the old woods to its shore, where the cosy Eldpallkojan hut offers a warm place to sit, grill a sausage and take in the calm of the surrounding tarns.↗↗
What makes it appealing is how effortless the wilderness feeling is: it sits within walking distance of the Säfsen cabin village, yet the path past the church and down through the rolling forest delivers that sense of being far out in the wild. The lake doubles as a stillwater fishing water and a quiet picnic stop, and it forms the natural turnaround for several marked trails, so you can keep it to a short wander or chain it into a longer day out.↗↗

The hut by the water — Eldpallkojan
The heart of any visit to Säfstjärn is Eldpallkojan, a rustic shelter right by the lake that is the reward at the end of the walks. Part fireplace hut, part picnic spot, it has tables, benches and a grill place both outside and inside, so a fika coffee or a grilled korv sausage can happen whatever the weather does.
