Skansen Alanäs

What You'll See on the Trail

A signed path winds through the forested hillside past a variety of well-preserved military structures. Visitors can enter concrete shelters (skyddsrum), crawl through an anti-tank gun garage (pansarvärnsgarage), inspect open machine-gun pillboxes, and observe firing slits and observation posts still showing the marks of their 1940s builders. The fortification is built into and onto the bedrock of the hill, giving the whole site a sense of rugged integration with the landscape. At the top, a resting point rewards the climb with sweeping views over the village of Alanäset and the shimmering expanse of Lake Flåsjön.↗↗↗

One ambitious project still in the works is the opening of the large rock chamber (bergrum) deeper in the hillside — a subterranean bunker carved directly into the mountain. Until that is accessible, the visible structures alone give a vivid sense of how this quiet backwater was once Sweden's last line of defence.↗

The Wider Bunkertur

Skansen Alanäs is the anchor of a self-drive heritage route called the Bunkertur, linking all four wartime fortifications along the Vildmarksvägen. Southward, you can visit Storån (with a roadblock and gun garage), Sjulsåsen (eleven bunkers and machine-gun emplacements, including an opened one), and Fågelberget (five bunkers plus a combined shelter). Each site has an information board and a marked walking route, making it possible to spend a half-day or full day following the ghost of Sweden's wartime defence line through scenic, sparsely populated country.↗↗

Practical Information for Visitors

Skansen Alanäs is free to visit and open year-round. Parking is available at the trailhead beside the road at Alanäset, with good signage from Route 342 about 40 kilometres northwest of Strömsund. A large information board with a map of the site and suggested walking route stands at the parking area. The site is considered child-friendly and has a picnic table for a brief stop. On summer weekends, volunteer guides sometimes offer tours lasting roughly 1.5 hours; booking or checking ahead with Göran Norman (phone +46 70 773 67 61) is a good idea if you want the full story told by someone who was part of the excavation.↗↗↗

Visitors are reminded that access to the site is at their own risk. Sturdy footwear is recommended — some passages and floors can be uneven, damp, or low-headed — and a torch (flashlight) is sensible if you want to explore inside the darker bunkers. Helmets are even suggested for the careful or the clumsy.↗
