AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The reservoir you will find on the map as the Dniprodzerzhyns'ke Reservoir is today better known as the Kamianske Reservoir, renamed in 2017 when the city of Dniprodzerzhynsk became Kamianske. It is one of the five great basins of the Dnieper cascade, a long, narrow sheet of impounded river water strung across the borderlands of Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava and Kirovohrad oblasts in central Ukraine.↗↗↗↗
It is not a postcard lake but a working river landscape, created in the mid-1960s when the dam of the Middle Dnieper Hydroelectric Station backed up the Dnieper into a basin roughly 114 km long, about 5 km wide on average (8 km at its broadest) and covering some 567 square kilometres. Its water generates electricity, carries freight to the ports of Kremenchuk and Horishni Plavni, feeds fish farms and drinking-water intakes, and gives locals wide open-water horizons, sandy shallows and a serious fishing culture.↗↗
